- The centre back has now undergone surgery to repair a tendon in his knee
- Liverpool will not rule their defender out of the rest of the season just yet
- But the rehab is thought to be long and his place at Euro 2020 is up in the air
- Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has already been hit with injuries to defenders Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold
Joe Gomez’s surgery to repair the patellar tendon in his left knee has been deemed a success by Liverpool.
The central defender was injured at St George’s Park on Wednesday and the manner of it — there was nobody around him — left England head coach Gareth Southgate devastated.
‘I had a chat with Jurgen Klopp,’ Southgate said. ‘We’re always for player welfare and to lose a player in the way that we did yesterday, it was tragic for the boy.

Gomez’s injury presents another problem for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp in defence
‘Unfortunately the injury was so unique in the way it happened, it was probably a consequence of the number of games. There needs to be a look at the calendar.’
As Gomez had the procedure surgeons did not discover any damage to his cruciate, medial or lateral ligaments.
As such, Liverpool will not rule Gomez out for the season but he faces a challenge to be fit for the Euros next summer.
He missed the World Cup and Champions League final in 2018 after ankle surgery when he was hurt playing for England against Holland.
